A Field Guide to the War

Who’s who, where things happen, and the questions you didn’t know you had.

The Parrots

The Republic, mostly. Sometimes underground.

King Josiah

King of the Parrots, ruler of the Republic. Drinks coffee, wears a cloak, dies in battle, eventually reborn.

Jeff

Josiah's loyal servant and advisor. Stutters through speeches. Becomes king after Josiah's death and spends a lot of time crying.

General Anthony

A Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo. Strokes his pastel crest before battle, then brings the machine gun.

Matt

Frequent prisoner of the ducks. Has spent so much time in Alburteu prison he can give directions to it.

Demetrius

Parrot time-traveller. Used Josiah's time machine to confront Edward in the past. Also a prison veteran. Sometimes spelled Demitrius.

Arthur

Undercover crow working for the parrots. Sketches dangerous plans in a notebook (including a 'mega parrot').

Oscar

Spy. Constantly happens to be standing nearby when Edward announces an evil plan.

Lucas

Juggernaut. First one to the front lines. Carries the shield Arthur hides behind during boss fights.

Bennett ("Bob")

Construction parrot. Rebuilt the kingdom after the war. Goes by Bob for short. Mysteriously disappeared at the start of Book 8.

The Ducks

The Mighty Ducks of Edward. Plus their crow problem.

King Edward

A Call Duck whose annoying quacking accidentally started the entire war. King of the Mighty Ducks. Has died and been revived more than once.

General Richardson

Duck military commander. Led the ducks against the humans in the early days. Captured during the bird war.

Skyrupture

Crow antagonist. “You can call me Crow because you won’t need to tell anyone my name.” Wields dark-energy magic.

Quackator Apex

The true mastermind — King Edward’s secret closest advisor. Pilots a rubber duck mech equipped with windshield wipers (anti-smoke-grenade).

Places

The Netherlands

Where it all began. Edward the Call Duck was quacking at his friends. His neighbours got annoyed. One of them yelled. Edward held a grudge.

Republic of the Parrots

The above-ground parrot kingdom. Overrun by ducks during the Battle for the Birds. Bennett rebuilt it later.

Underground Republic

A cave network the parrots dug with pickaxes after going into hiding. Took them one month.

Lake Alburteu

The silver marshes. Where King Edward gathered the ducks in sorted ranks at dawn before the first big attack.

Alburteu Prison

The duck jail. Matt and Demetrius are both alumni. Demetrius eventually used his prior visit to plan a jailbreak.

Frequently Squawked Questions

How did the war start?

A Call Duck named Edward was quacking at his friends in the Netherlands. The neighbours got annoyed. One yelled at him. Edward held a grudge, recruited millions of ducks over three days, built fire jets and naval ships, and turned on humanity. The parrots eventually got pulled in.

Who is Jeff?

Originally King Josiah's servant. Got promoted to royal advisor. Became king himself after Josiah died, though he stuttered through the eulogy so badly that nobody could understand him.

Did the parrots win?

Mostly. By the end of Book 8 they've defeated Quackator Apex and the phoenix-revived Edward, and Josiah comes back. But a lot of main characters didn't make it.

What is Quackator Apex?

Edward's secret closest advisor. Revealed in Book 8. Pilots a rubber duck mech and tries to revive Edward using a phoenix soul. Briefly succeeds.

Why does Bennett also go by 'Bob'?

Unclear. He just does.

Why is Matt always in prison?

He keeps getting captured. Demetrius once said: “Luckily, I’ve been in prison before, so I should be able to invite these ducks to a jail break.” The Alburteu prison has a lot of repeat customers.
